Every year, Muslims all over the world abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk in rememberance of and gratitude to Allah Almighty. Every year, Ifraj organises an Iftar assembly across Pemba and Zanzibar, in accordance with the values of the holy month. Eligible families are entitled to 10 kg of rice, 25 kg of wheat flour, 5 kg of sugar, 5 L of cooking oil, 400 g of milk powder, and 10 kg of beans each. The cost of feeding an average family during the holy month is 61.67 USD. During the year, Ifraj continues its effort to provide eligible orphan families with rations to sustain their wellbeing for a year. This leaves a direct impact on their mental, physical and emotional development. Ifraj is addressing this concern by providing a daily serving of a hot breakfast. Over 5000 children have benefitted from the programme. The meals range from maize and millet porridge, to boiled eggs, beans and rice, and peanut butter sandwiches. For only 18 USD, each child receives two pairs of trousers and two pairs of t-shirts. This effort aims to provide impacted communities access to clean and accessible toilets within and around Pemba Island. To this day, women and children resort to unsanitary options to maintain their dignity. At their request, Ifraj Foundation is working to build community washrooms enabled with four latrines, one W/C for the differently abled, and one shower. Each public toilet costs 4,436 USD to build, ranging between 6-8 weeks of construction time. The benefit of the public toilet is its wide accessibility, and sanitary amenities. Ifraj follows standard practice of installing water tanks as back-up storage whenever a water well or water pipes are installed, to ensure communities do not run out of water supply. For each 5,000 lt. of water, it costs about 500 USD. The inaccessibility of sanitary pads results in schoolgirls missing school 23% of the time. On average, each girl misses 10 weeks of a 42 week academic year. In order to ensure that our girls are receiving their share of an adequate education, Ifraj Foundation is following the footsteps of other successful organisations, such as the Dare Women's Foundation, to provide schoolgirls with disposable pads in order for them to continue going to school throughout the year. Of our many working programmes, Ifraj supports Fisherman by providing technical tools such as engines, fishing lines, artificial lures, hooks, nets, boots, gloves, hats, and wooden local boats. Fishing is one of the key surviving industries that contribute to Pemba's economy. Ironically, local fisherman risk low catch frequency due to limited equipment. Ifraj is improving their skills by providing new technology for equipment. The poor infrastructure does not allow for cars, trucks or rickshaws to pass through. Due to the difficult road, over 3000 people in adjacent villages are deprived access to essential care.
