In one school in Micheweni, Pemba, more than 400 schoolgirls do not attend school during their menstruation period every month. The inaccessibility of sanitary pads results in schoolgirls missing school 23% of the time. On average, each girl misses 10 weeks of a 42 week academic year. 

In order to ensure that our girls are receiving their share of an adequate education, Ifraj Foundation is following the footsteps of other successful organisations, such as the Dare Women's Foundation, to provide schoolgirls with disposable pads in order for them to continue going to school throughout the year.

Our target is to teach schoolgirls, and seamstresses, the skills to sew reusable pads. 

Since Ifraj has been established, we have constructed more than 130 houses that mainly serve orphan families. Each house cost about 10,500 USD, and includes three bedrooms, one living room, one kitchen, and a toilet. Each house typically serves an average of 7 people.

Madrassas are social institutions that are designed to teach young children Quran, and provides them with a purposeful way to spend their time. Ifraj Zanzibar Foundation responds to community requests of either finishing or constructing madrassas for the benefit of young children across Pemba and Zanzibar.

As part of our commitment to empowering members of Pemba's working society, Ifraj makes a concerted effort to offer the necessary skills and tools for men and women to maximise their welfare.

Of our many working programmes, Ifraj supports Fisherman by providing technical tools such as engines, fishing lines, artificial lures, hooks, nets, boots, gloves, hats, and wooden local boats. 

Fishing is one of the key surviving industries that contribute to Pemba's economy. Ironically, local fisherman risk low catch frequency due to limited equipment. Ifraj is improving their skills by providing new technology for equipment. 

Since this project has kick-started, daily catch frequencies have increased by 70%. 

Ifraj Zanzibar Foundation has constructed 9 mosques from scratch, and has supported the maintenance of countless others. Mosques are the cornerstone of Islamic public life across Pemba and Zanzibar, and at the request of many communities across both islands, we have constructed many mosques to enable communities to have a safe and accessible place to hold their daily prayers.

Birkau road is a 4.5 km road connecting 6 villages together, and its current state does not allow for affected communities to efficiently and effectively travel.

The poor infrastructure does not allow for cars, trucks or rickshaws to pass through. Due to the difficult road, over 3000 people in adjacent villages are deprived access to essential care.

Ifraj Zanzibar Foundation is working with key partners to develop this road through road reshaping, watering and compaction, and asphalt application in critical areas, to ensure mobility and ease transportation.
