Recent Projects

Ifraj Zanzibar Foundation is currently involved in a number of projects across Pemba and Zanzibar. Some noteable projects include Gogomawe Pedestrian Crossing Bridge, Marehemu Khadija Mohammad Orphanage Home, Masjid Marhuma Khadija Mohammad, water access for Limbani Secondary Skuli, continued housing support and well/borehole construction.

Gogomawe 78-Meter Pedestrian Crossing Bridge

Pemba, Zanzibar

The 78-meter Gogomawe Pedestrian Crossing Bridge is being built to safely connect two communities that become extremely difficult to reach during the rainy season. When heavy rains raise the water level, children struggle to reach school, families are cut off from essential services, and daily movement becomes dangerous.

The bridge will have an important impact especially for women, children, the elderly and vulnerable families. Pregnant women needing to reach a hospital for delivery or emergency care will have a safer route, while children will be able to continue attending school even during the rainy season. It will also improve access to healthcare, markets, work and other essential services.

Once completed, this bridge will provide a safe, reliable year-round pedestrian connection, helping reduce isolation and improve the everyday lives of the surrounding communities.

Marhuma Khadija Mohammad Orphanage Home

Micheweni – Korea Area, Pemba

The Marhuma Khadija Mohammad Orphanage Home is a dedicated residential and care facility established to provide a safe, loving, and supportive home for orphaned and vulnerable children. The orphanage consists of 10 rooms, together with 2 spacious learning halls, an office, playroom, and other essential facilities designed to support the children's daily living, education, development, and well-being. The home can accommodate approximately 30 orphans, including children admitted from a very early age, even from infancy, providing them with long-term care and a stable environment in which to grow. Adjacent to the orphanage, we have also constructed a Qur’an Madrasa to provide Islamic and Qur’anic education to the children and the surrounding community.

Together, the orphanage and Madrasa aim to provide not only shelter, but also care, education, spiritual guidance, and a nurturing environment, giving vulnerable children the opportunity for a safer and brighter future.

Masjid Marhuma Khadija Mohammad

Chake Chake, Pemba, Zanzibar

Masjid Marhuma Khadija Mohammad is planned as a comprehensive Islamic and community center serving the people of Chake Chake and surrounding communities.

The Masjid will accommodate approximately 900 worshippers (musalleen) and will include:

  • A spacious main prayer hall

  • Dedicated prayer facilities for men and women

  • An Islamic Library for students, families, and the wider community

  • Dedicated facilities for Qur’an studies and Islamic education

  • Imam’s residence

  • Wudhu and toilet facilities

  • Supporting spaces required for the smooth operation of the Masjid

The project is intended not only to provide a place for the five daily prayers and Jumu’ah, but also to become a center for Qur’anic learning, Islamic knowledge, education, and community development for generations to come.

Limbani Secondary Skuli

Wete District, Limbani, Pemba

The people of Wete have been facing water shortage, leaving teachers, parents, and students faced with significant difficulties. While they are at school, students sometimes have to leave the school premises to look for water elsewhere. In some cases, this exposes them to environmental hazards, including encounters with snakes and other dangers, as well as increasing the possibility of students dropping out of school.

In order to meet this concern, Ifraj helped to build a water well and borehole for the students of Limbani Secondary School so that children would have reliable water access throughout the day.

Mosque Construction

Ifraj has been supporting the finished construction of Mzambarauni and Mkoani Ngombeni Mosques. These two mosques were started by other gracious donors but as funds dried up, they were unable to finish the projects. Working with local organizations and NGOs, Ifraj helps communities complete infrastructure projects—mosques, water systems, housing—that matter to them.

Mfikiwa Community Park

Mfikiwa, Pemba

Mfikiwa's first public park is under development, designed to serve as a community gathering space where residents can access and enjoy green space. The park will provide a place for recreation, connection, and gathering—something the community had previously lacked.
