Empowering communities across Pemba and Zanzibar to build a brighter future.

Our Mission

To drive sustainable change by investing in community-led projects that prioritize education, community resilience, and economic empowerment.

Our Impact

From constructing hillside steps to improve access to essential services in remote villages to supporting initiatives that enhance economic opportunities, Ifraj works hand-in-hand with communities to design solutions that meet their unique needs.

Ifraj Zanzibar Foundation supports the hopeful

Ifraj / إفراج (n.); release from distress

Ifraj Zanzibar Foundation is a non-profit organization operating between the Islands of Pemba and Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania. Ifraj was founded upon the values of good will, empowerment, and honor.

Along with our Orphan Support Programme, Ifraj Foundation supports community services and infrastructure. Our most recent project was building public toilets for a small community in Northern Pemba; however, we have been involved in building a footbridge, constructing mosques and religious schools, reconstructing water pipes, and most recently, working to support women and girls in sewing and producing hygienic and durable sanitary pads.

Ifraj Zanzibar Foundation operates through a bottom-up system. Our projects are community-oriented, and are thoroughly studied for impact, consequence and benefit.

Our sanitation efforts include constructing 17 public toilet facilities in under a year, each designed with accessibility and dignity in mind, featuring local WCs, handicap-accessible toilets, and showers.

Our housing initiatives have provided safe and secure shelter for over 2,000 individuals, with 291 homes built and 23 unfinished homes completed for orphan families.

In education, we have supported quality learning environments by constructing 9 schools, 21 nurseries, and providing 935 desks to schools in 2024 alone, along with 1,576 uniforms and scholarships for 273 bright students.
